“Earth to Liz,” Ethan says, waving a hand in front of my face. “What’s wrong?”
Zoned out again. “I don’t know,” I answer, even though I do. I’d just rather not say.
His warm hand rubs my shoulder before slowly pulling me into his embrace. He can always tell when I’m holding something back; the coy grin on his lips gives it away. “Come on,” he says, injecting some levity into his tone.
A defeated sigh escapes me. “I’m just…bored. With life, I mean. Like, in general.”
Ethan nods. “I think I know what you mean.”
I shrug. “Like, remember when you were younger, when life used to be so full? Every day was some kind of stupid adventure. Where did all that go? Nowadays, I’d give anything to be in over my head. Anything. I just wanna feel alive again.”
Ethan holds me tighter. With a chuckle, he says, “Well, my offer still stands, Liz. You could always run away with me. That’d be pretty crazy, right?”
I give him a playful slap on the chest. Although, I can’t dismiss the idea outright. After all, maybe a little crazy is exactly what I need right about now…
